Teaching Kids the Fruit of the Spirit

As a Christian mom, my goal every day is to parent in a way that follows Proverbs 22:6. Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. (ESV)  Teaching my children the fruit of the Spirit is a great step toward training them up to love Jesus and follow the Bible’s teaching.

The fruit of the Spirit can be an abstract idea to teach children, but with hands-on crafts and activities, books, and songs, kids will quickly learn and begin to understand the character qualities that make up the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (ESV)

Listening to music is one of the easiest ways to help kids memorize the Bible. We love to listen to Slugs and Bugs scripture songs as we go about our day. My preschool-age kids have memorized many Bible verses, including the fruit of the Spirit, simply by listening to these songs.

My kids also love reading books. This book by The Daily Grace Co. defines and explains each fruit of the Spirit and gives an additional verse that correlates to each fruit to help children understand the character qualities.

My kids love to do crafts, and incorporating Biblical truths into crafts is a fun way to get them to engage with the Bible.

I created two versions of this printable matching fruit of the Spirit activity for my kids to practice placing the fruits on the tree or in the basket by matching each fruit to its outline or matching the words on the cut out fruits to the words on the circles on the game template. Big Sister is four and enjoys sounding out the words as she places the fruits. Her favorite is “goodness grapes”. She laughs every time she says it. I laminated this activity and used Velcro dots to make it more durable so we can do it over and over again. I put these fruit of the Spirit activities, the 10 Commandments matching activity, and the Days of Creation matching activity in a binder to take to church in our busy bag. The kids love to do the activities while they sit in church.

Big Sister’s favorite homeschool activity (besides learning about birds) is practicing her handwriting. So I created these double-sided flash cards to help us as we seek to apply the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Each card emphasizes one of the fruits. One side has an extra Bible verse to memorize and help us understand that particular fruit. The other side has a tracing activity to practice writing each fruit of the Spirit. I laminated these flash cards, and Big Sister loves to use dry erase markers on them to practice her penmanship, writing and erasing over and over. This is another activity we take to church in our binder.

As we listen to songs, read books, and work on activities that teach the fruit of the Spirit, I pray that my kids are absorbing the information and that I will see evidence of it changing their hearts to be more like Christ.

As another way to help my kids engage with the fruit of the Spirit, I’d love to add a page for the fruit of the Spirit to our felt quiet book that we take to church! What is your favorite activity to do to help your kids learn about the Bible?
