Teaching Kids the Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are a foundational piece when it comes to teaching children about the Bible and what it means to have a relationship with God. Just as we teach kids the biblical accounts of Creation, Jesus’ birth, and Jesus’ death and resurrection, we also need to teach them the story of Moses receiving and delivering the Ten Commandments after leading the Israelites out of Egypt.

Teaching kids the Ten Commandments is important to help them understand that God has expectations and rules. Before a child can repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their Savior–the most important decision they can make in their life–they must first understand that they are a sinner, and they have broken God’s rules. The Ten Commandments also offer us insight into how we are to love God and love others.

Helping Kids Memorize the 10 Commandments

One of my favorite ways to help children memorize information, is to have them listen to songs. My kids have learned many songs to help them memorize scripture, the books of the Bible, and biblical truths.

Slugs and Bugs has five albums with songs that help kids memorize Bible verses, including the Ten Commandments. I will mention that while many of the Slugs and Bugs Bible verse songs are direct quotations of scripture, this one is a paraphrased version of the Ten Commandments.

Turning truth from the Bible into a craft is always a fun way to get kids to engage with the content.

To help my kids learn the 10 Commandments, I created this simple matching activity. It is a great way to help them engage with the Ten Commandments and learn to put them in order. We love to take it to church with us in our busy bag along with these Creation and Fruit of the Spirit activities.

Supplies you will need for this activity

The Ten Commandments Matching Activity Template includes three different matching options to choose from based on the ability level of your child. It also includes the options of the commandments written as direct quotations from the ESV Bible or paraphrased in kid-friendly language.

Color-coded Version
Numbered Version
Roman Numeral Version

You can use it as a simple printable worksheet at home or in a Sunday School class and have kids cut out the commandments and glue them onto the stone tablets in the correct order.

Or you can make it a lasting activity that kids will enjoy doing over and over again. My kids like doing this one in our Busy Binder for church, and I love that my two year old can participate and complete the activity by matching the colors.

10 Commandments Binder Activity Directions

  1. Print on heavy cardstock the Ten Commandments Matching Activity Template that matches your child’s ability level.
  2. Cut out the rectangles with the commandments written on them. Laminate the rectangles and the matching “game board” with the stone tablets on it.
  3. Cut the laminated rectangles out, leaving a bit of the laminated material sticking out past the cardstock so it doesn’t peel off.
  4. Place Velcro dots on the backs of the rectangles as well as on the blank spaces on the stone tablets. I cut the Velcro dots in half and put two halves on each one.
  5. OPTIONAL – Use a 3-hole punch to put holes in the “game board” page so you can put it in a binder and use it on the go!
